From Fr. Aldrich's Desk

Your generosity has enabled us to renew the mission of "first proclamation evangelism" through local lay missionaries in Taiwan. Now we see two types of fruits resulting from this generosity. First, CLM has officially become the "Catholic Chinese Lay Missionary Foundation." This new foundation was set up by the Society of Jesus and will continue to focus on finding, forming, and supporting local, lay missionaries to do "first proclamation" evangelism among Chinese everywhere in the world. Second, in Taiwan we see real fruits in conversions and baptism. For example, in the Archdiocese of Taipei, our lay missionaries worked in four of the six parishes that had the highest number of baptisms during the eighteen-month celebration of the Catholic Church's 150 years in Taiwan. In the rest of this newsletter you will read more of these good fruits.
With your help we have made a good start and now have become a Foundation. I know we still have much to improve in all areas of first proclamation evangelism: finding catechumens, leading them to a basic conversion, instructing them in the content of the Faith, teaching them to pray and develop a spiritual life, pastoral care during their catechumen period and first year after Baptism, cooperating well with local parish and teaching parishioners how to do One-Brings-One invitation of non-Catholics to the catechumen courses, etc., but we are constantly evaluating and trying to improve. Relying on your continued partnership in this mission, we can look toward the future with a realistic optimism that together we can contribute to many Chinese coming to know and love Jesus and the Father.

Hsinchu Evangelism Center

By Evangelist Sywen Lwo
I started the ministry part-time at Kuan-si in March this year and have been working full-time here since July. In this short period of time, God has already bestowed His marvelous deeds among the people here. This area was like a spiritual desert with only one baptism the year before. With the evangelists’ full involvement, this rocky desert is becoming more like an oasis. Once their indifferent, exclusionary, fearful, doubtful, and self-doubting attitude had been overcome, the Hakka ethic of loyalty, determination, and unity shone through. God’s plan has thus been spread among Catholics and non-Catholics.
With six volunteer teachers, we started a free summer program, which included writing, music, and art classes. One hundred people attended the program weekly and 85% of them are non-Catholic; a catechumen program which has 23 people started in September. About 50 people every week are attending our on-going community activities or workshops, such as fitness programs and physical or psychological health workshops in the parishes. The church door is now opened to welcome the thirty thousand residents of Kuan-si.
God’s beloved servant and generous benefactors, I deeply appreciate your partnership with us. Many here are spiritually thirsty and need our help. Let us journey together in the name of Jesus Christ! May the Lord bless you and your family.

"Momma" Tosca

"Momma" Tosca
By Evangelist Jrli (Tosca) Yin
Mt. 19:29 - And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life. This Bible verse has been fulfilled for me through my call from Jesus to be a lay evangelist.
Catholic Friendship Center invited us to offer a catechumen class this past July to help young adults to know the Truth and convert to Jesus. Once again I have had the chance to mingle with these young truth seekers. The attendance has been fairly stable around 14 to 18 people. The Center Director, Fr. Alan Doyle is pleased by my teaching style and method of mentorship. He is now actively planning a second class.
This was very clear to me while I was accompanying them: it is important to lead them to know on whom to depend, what to choose, and to desire the reconciliation between God and human beings. Here, I would like to quote what was shared on the Friendship Monthly Newsletter by one of my students:
I was very happy to learn about the catechumen class in the Catholic Friendship Center, and I had free time to participate in the entire program, because I just graduated from school. This program was taught by Ms. Tosca Yin, and I called her “Momma” Tosca like everyone else did. She is friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable, and walks the talk. We started the search for our inner self according to Maslow’s psychological need theory, then cut into the theme of human nature, and finally compared it to Church teaching. I posted my class notes on Facebook after every class to share this beautiful faith with everyone, and I always eagerly finish reading the handouts in one sitting. I wish the class could go on forever. This is a great opportunity to examine one’s life. I sincerely invite everyone to join us!!

Diocese of Jiayi

Upon the invitation from Rev. Thomas Chang at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in the Diocese of Jiayi, our teacher Yuhtsyr Lee, lay evangelist Jr-syung Hsu, and student Ling-ling Hu went to the diocese with Fr. Aldrich to give a one-day workshop on Systematic One-Brings-One Evangelism for 80 part-time volunteer catechists who run the catechumen programs in the diocese. After the workshop, Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish started the first Systematic One-Brings-One Evangelism program in the Diocese and now has 25 – 30 catechumens on Wednesdays. Bishop Chung strongly recommends the Systematic One-Brings-One Evangelism program and invited these catechists to attend our three years formation program to become full-time lay evangelists.

Taichung Evangelism Center

By Evangelist Hwei-ming (Grace) Huang
St. Vianney Parish at Taichung Nantun
After the “Weiya (end of year party) One-Brings-One Evangelism” in February, the parishioners accompany their non-Catholic friends, relatives, or family members to attend the catechumen classes. We are expecting 40 people be baptized on Christmas Day this year. Thirty of them are currently in Grace’s four catechumen classes.
Queen of Peace Parish at Lukang
This parish only had about 50 active parishioners before we came. After a successful collaboration experience of five baptisms with us last December, we had another seven baptisms on Nov. 13 this year. There all came from Grace’s three catechumen classes.
Evangelization is full of challenges. I’m thankful that God has blessed the evangelism ministry in Taichung and made it fruitful. Because of God’s grace, we have continuous conversions of many catechumens to our Lord, and they have been baptized as children of God. They often say, “Lord, it’s great to know You!” or “Why had nobody told me about the Lord earlier?” The good news of the Lord is precious and a human being’s ultimate desire is to know Him. So here we pray that the Lord call and bless more people to be His evangelism partner.

Seasons Greetings

Dear friends:
While we are preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus, we have some good news to share with you in this newsletter too:

- In order to sustain our future growth, Chinese Lay Missionaries has officially become the "Catholic Chinese Lay Missionary Foundation."
- The newest Hsinchu Evangelism Center, which started nine months ago, has already turned Kuan-si from a spiritually rocky desert to be more like an oasis.
- Bishop Hong at the Archdiocese of Taipei recognized six parishes that had the highest number of baptisms during the eighteen-month celebration of the Catholic Church's 150 years in Taiwan. Our evangelist Jr-syung Hsu has ministered at two of these six parishes, and one of them is ranked second.
- Evangelist Tosca Yin continues her outstanding ministry at parishes and hospitals. Two of the parishes in which she has ministered were among the six recognized parishes. On top of that, she is now expanding the young adult evangelism programs too.
- Evangelist Grace Huang, who was transferred to Taichung Evangelism Center in February, is expecting a total of 40 baptisms by the end of this year. This number does not include the baptisms at Luchou this year, before she was transferred to Taichung.

We started a new bilingual blog: http://chineselayevangelist.blogspot.com earlier this year and now has world-wide viewers. Please feel free to subscribe and leave comments. We plan to have new blog posts every month.

Thank you for your generous support in the past. We have 13 lay evangelists now and will grow to 18 in the next fiscal year. We again need your continuous financial support, and please also pray for all the evangelists and their ministries. Your support and encouragement bring us the strength to walk on the journey of evangelism and allow more people to experience the joy of the conversion to Jesus!

May the Lord bestow His blessings on you and your loved ones!

Sincerely,

Rev. Lou Aldrich S.J.
